Weekend Update - January 7th

Weekend Update
It really was windy here on Thursday night – Friday morning.

I could hear the wind in the trees from around midnight until 6:00 AM. Since my building is on top of a high hill, we probably had gusts up to 45 miles an hour / 70 kilometers an hour and steady wind at around 20 miles an hour / 30 kilometers an hour.

I noticed a couple of tree limbs that had been blown away from the tree trunks during the night. My balcony is a further mess with leaves and small branches now. Next weekend looks like a great time to sweep it off.

On the subject of tree leaves from the park next door, this morning I noticed that a small eucalyptus tree had almost all of its leaves blown off. The leaves were a nice bright green around Christmas time and now they are either yellow or orange so that must not be a good sign for the tree’s health and for the rest of the eucalyptus trees’ health. The majority of the trees in the park near my building are eucalyptus trees.

There are three or four pine trees that have been growing rather strongly for the last year or so by my balcony. The trees are directly in front of my balcony. I expect that in ten or twelve years that my view will be largely blocked by healthy pine trees.

I watched the local news report on television on Friday night. The news readers said that upwards of 105,000 homes were without electrical power for all or part of the day. I guess it was a good thing that the power outage happened in the Winter when it is cool and not in the Summer when it will be very hot.

Visitors
We had visitors from the United Kingdom [2], Portugal [2], Japan [4], Philippines, Canada [4], Brazil [2], Korea [4], Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Texas, China, France, South Africa, Spain, Australia, Poland, Thailand [2],and Singapore.

We had four curious visitors who stopped by for twenty five minutes, sixteen minutes, twelve minutes and eleven minutes.

We had two looker visitors this week who read eight pages in two minutes and seven pages in one minute.

Woman of the Moment
I was looking in the paper today at the television listings for Sunday night. The schedule showed that Kyoko Hasegawa’s show, Delicious Proposal, was not going to be aired. I think this is a misprint because the schedule shows the station will broadcast a Japanese New Year program and that was shown last weekend.

If I am wrong, I still have my Women of the Moment photos to look at and they are much better images of Kyoko than the television show where she is wearing a baggy chef’s outfit.

My Friend Vivian and Lunch
My friend and I went to lunch today. We went to the L.A. Food Show; we go there because it is almost half way between our homes and we love the food they offer. The L.A. Food Show is in the middle of a mall and doesn’t look like very much from the outside.

I ordered the Avocado Club Egg Rolls and Vivian had a Poke Martini. Being good friends, we shared the appetizers. The shredded cabbage that comes with the egg rolls has feta cheese in it for an unusual and very pleasant taste to it.

We had not talked for a long time beyond the exchange of emails. Emails, while always a great way to maintain contact, are no substitute for excellent conversation. We did converse a great deal today and ended up with a two hour lunch.

Perfectomundo.

I showed no imagination in my lunch order; I had another hamburger with cheese and avocado. Vivian had some garlic noodles with scallops that looked very good to me.

This should come as no surprise that we split a molten chocolate cake for our dessert. Vivian and I both love chocolate and this dessert is almost all chocolate. It is a near perfect dessert.

At the end of the meal, as we walked towards our cars, I felt extremely satisfied with my lunch and the time I spent with Vivian. I also wanted to rush home and sample her home made cookies that were a semi delayed Christmas gift. Her regular chocolate chip cookie was absolutely yummy and the oatmeal chocolate chip was wonderful.

The answer is No.

I will not be sharing her cookies with anyone.

El Gringo
I went to El Gringo yesterday for my dinner because I went to lunch with Vivian today. I had expected to see Whitney the Server. She wasn’t working when I stopped by in the late afternoon – early evening for a dinner.

For some strange reason, I felt compelled to have an El Diablo Burrito for my dinner. The El Diablo Burrito is a regular burrito made with blackened shredded beef [carne asada]. The beef is then spiced up. I could taste the spicy beef in my mouth for several hours and more than one large glass of tea and water.

I didn’t take a photo of the burrito because I was planning on having it for my dinner. I will take a photo of it if I have it next weekend.

Doug
Doug called me yesterday to check in and let me know he received the grades on three of his four classes. He received top marks in all three classes so that unless something dreadful happened in his fourth class, he will be on the Dean’s List again.

Doug has made the Dean’s List for every semester at California State University Fullerton. I think this is a remarkable achievement for him or any other student for that matter.

We talked about the film, CHILDREN OF MEN. Doug went to see it again with his friend Derek. I told him that I really enjoyed the film although I thought some parts dragged a bit and could have been made shorter.

Doug thought I might not like the ending. I said, on the contrary, I thought the ending was completely logical and well thought out. I said it made sense within the framework of the film. I won’t spoil the film for those of you who have not seen it.

That was my weekend gentle readers. Be well and stay happy in the week ahead.
