Another Sunny Day

Another Sunny Day
It was warm and sunny again today. It was one of those days that make me glad that I live in Southern California at the beach.

On the way home from lunch with Amber [see below], I stopped at the market to pick up food. Doug will be staying for dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday so I needed to stock up on things.

While I was in the market, Doug called with some questions about Daylight Savings Time going into effect on Saturday night – Sunday morning. The advancing of the change to early March from late April caught him by surprise. We talked for a few minutes and everything seems cool now.

The big problem is how to advance the clock in the Marisa Couper. The car has been keeping track of the time and making the changes automatically; probably because of a chip in the car somewhere. I told him to break out the owner’s manual and take a look in it. I said it will give him something to do while he waits for his haircut on Friday.

My Friend Amber
I took my friend Amber to lunch today.

Having lunch with Amber was like a warm sunny Southern California day; you just feel so good afterwards.

I consider the lunch to be a singular and not Cingular [the cell phone company] success for me. I did not spill any of the New England style clam chowder on my shirt and I caught no spinach with my teeth.

Amber picked the venue for lunch and it was a sea food grill in the Naples – Belmont Shore section of Long Beach. It was close to her home. Surprisingly, it was easy to get to for me from my place in Redondo Beach even with a lot of surface street driving.

Amber had what she says is her favorite dish at the restaurant, wild Alaskan halibut. Going with the wild theme, I had some wild New Zealand Orange Roughy. There is a long story to Orange Roughy and maybe some day I will tell it.

Or, maybe not; one never knows what I will tell.

For the record, we did share dessert. It was white chocolate cheesecake with some raspberry stuff on top of the cheesecake.

Last week, Amber said she could think of twenty questions to ask me. She drew a blank at lunch today so I had to ask some of questions.

Odds and Ends
I cleaned out my email address book this morning. I deleted almost 25% of the addresses. I had picked up a number of email addresses from school. Now that the students have moved on to new classes and new instructors, I no longer need them in my address book.

If a student wants to contact me, he or she can find my email address in their notes, assuming they saved them. Alternatively, they can try to find me before or after a class at school; the instructor schedules are published and available to any student. I do not anticipate too many students will want to contact me.

Cell Phones and Driving
I do not use my cell phone when I am driving unless I am stopped for a traffic signal and am unable to move or when I am stuck in traffic and am unable to move or move much faster than three miles an hour / five kilometers an hour. At that speed, I am going too slow to be any risk to anyone else and I am only likely to cause some nasty property damage to the other car’s bumpers.

I am writing this rantlet because I was nearly hit by a speeding SUV the other day.

In California, pedestrians have the right of way when they are in a crosswalk and vehicles are supposed to stop for them. We won’t discuss the law or whether it is good public policy.

I don’t feel like becoming medieval on you [dual PULP FICTION and Middle Ages religious philosophy reference].

Anyway and getting back on track.

The pedestrian stepped off the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street. The car in the lane closest to the pedestrian stopped and so did I. I should point out that while I was moving with the traffic flow; I was able to stop in an orderly and proper manner without slamming on my brakes, having the car weave about a bit, and smoking my tires or tyres.

The fat clown in the SUV behind me was talking on his cell phone and had to slam on his brakes to stop in time without hitting me. His SUV swerved and he smoked the tires when the wheels locked up.

I could almost read his lips and he was not a happy person.

I almost wish he had hit me because I could have nailed his insurance company to the wall and have them buy me a new car. I was without fault and he would have been dead meat. I would, of course, have had some injuries that hopefully would not have been too serious.

Woman of the Moment
This will be the last appearance of Mandy Lynn as a regular Woman of the Moment. She may reappear as a Best of 2007 feature.

Tomorrow, we have a new Woman of the Moment, Vivian Hsu. My friend Vivian suggested that I use her as a Woman of the Moment. I did find a bunch of photos of her but some were either partial or complete nude photos so I declined to include those images. I have enough images for a week or two of postings. All is not lost.

Be well and stay happy.
