Weekend Update - August 12th
Weekend Update
It was a nice, warm weekend for me.
I got some lesson plans written and I am looking forward to the two week break at the end of the term.
I did some reading. The reading was mostly to relax and enjoy the sun on the balcony over the weekend.
As usual, I went to El Gringo today for my late lunch or early dinner. Jess the Server wasn’t working and neither was the Fill In Server. There was a new server who was not very friendly so I did not speak with her very long. Since Jess has been out for four consecutive weeks, I am guessing that she is no longer with the company.
Saturday was the market day for me. Going to my market is always an adventure now that they are remodeling the store. I never know where I am going to find the food that I want to buy from trip to trip.
I did learn that Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf will be opening a coffee stand inside of the market. Excellent. Now, parking will not any trouble anymore. I will be able to pick up an iced coffee drink on my way out of the market.
Perfectomento.
Earthquake
We had an earthquake on Thursday morning. It happened around 1:00 or 2:00 AM. Obviously, I was asleep when it happened.
The earthquake was rated as a Richter Scale 4.6 or 4.7, a moderately strong temblor. The epicenter was about forty miles away. It only managed to knock some cans off of shelves in some markets, some ceiling tiles fell, and that was about it for the earthquake.
On Friday, the local major newspaper featured a story about a speech that was given by Lucy Jones from the U.S. Geological Service about the impact of a major earthquake in our Coachella Valley, 120 miles – 190 kilometers to the east of my flat and across several major fault lines. She said the Valley was about 150 years over due for a major earthquake and that thousands would die and the property damage would be in the billions.
Not the best news for those of us who live in earthquake country or people who live in the Valley.
Lucy Jones was the commencement speaker at Doug’s graduation. She had the same doom and gloom speech there as well.
We have spent several Spring Vacations in Palm Springs [Coachella Valley] back when the Princess and Doug were in middle school and high school.
Visitors
We had a nice pick up in visitors to the blog this week. We had visitors from Taiwan, Japan [8], Finland [6], India, Germany [3], Peru [2], Mexico, Panama [2], Norway, United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, Korea [2], Hungary, Poland, Canada [5], Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, Columbia, and Australia [2].
I wonder what I said or what images that I had up on the blog brought out the visitors from Japan and Finland.
We also had three visitors who stopped bye and stayed for a while; one for 28 minutes, one for 14 minutes, and one for 11 minutes.
Woman of the Moment
I was looking forward tonight’s Woman of the Moment and Masami Nagasawa. This is another theme image feature. I am running out of non-bikini theme images. I do not believe this will be a tragic event for the gentle readers.
Teaching
It is end of term course and faculty evaluation time at school. This is a big event for the administration. I got an email from the dean about students who had not completed their evaluations.
I am not surprised that the students have not done the evaluations. The evaluations only take a few minutes to complete. The students are generally lazy and for the most part self centered to an unusual degree; anything that does not personally and directly benefit them is something that they have no inclination to complete.
Of course, these same students get upset if I don’t have their papers graded by the next class session. At one time, I had given some thought to offering to provide reference letters to some of my students when they went out into the world and looked for work.
That is unlikely to happen now.
Flash Gordon
I watched the premiere of the new Sci-Fi Channel on Friday.
It was an interesting program but I am uncertain if I will be a regular viewer. All other things being equal, I will try to watch the program on Friday and see if I can get attached to the new series.
The CGI effects were certainly excellent and helped add to the program. The characters seemed to be too wooden and one dimensional.
The most disappointing character was Ming. Ming was too cleaned up and sanitized for my tastes. He lacked all of the malevolence of Ming the Merciless from the old Flash Gordon movies from the 1930s.
One good thing about the program is that it does not compete with my Korean soap opera serial in Friday nights.
DVD Order
I ordered some DVDs last week. I wanted to flesh out my collection of the AFI 100 Greatest Films list and my Academy Awards Best Picture list. I ordered them from Barnes & Noble because I am a member of their frequent buyer program so I saved an additional 10% on the purchase and picked up free shipping.
I think I came out ahead on the purchase. The sales tax was the same. I didn’t have to pay for gasoline to drive to DVD Planet and that was very nice.
My confirmation email said the DVDs would be shipped on August 21st. Fine; I was and not in hurry to get them.
I received one DVD on Friday and I received an email from Barnes & Noble on Friday that said they had shipped my DVDs about a week and a half early. This was certainly a nice result for me.
That was my weekend gentle readers. I hope your weekend was fun and pleasurable.
Be well and stay happy.
