Weekend Update - November 5th

Waiting for the Plumber
The plumber did finally show up on Thursday afternoon, after I posted the Weekend Preview, naturally. I have a new water heater now and I enjoyed a nice, long, hot shower Thursday night.

I was shocked at how expensive the new water heater was. The cost was around USD$890. I know part of that went to the plumbing company but that still seems like a lot of money for a device that I know is highly likely to fail within ten years. It seems that the product could be manufactured to last a little longer since there is very little in the way of novel technology involved.

I also have become extremely proficient at the use and operation of a wet – dry vacuum. I vacuumed up around twenty gallons of water from my carpet.

El Gringo on Thursday
I was tired from vacuuming on Thursday so I went to El Gringo for my dinner. It was mostly empty when I arrived but it was filled with some people waiting when I left. I had the Pollo Negro Salad because it is healthy.

This was my first time at El Gringo on a Thursday so I didn’t know the server. She had an annoying habit of referring to me as “love”; well, it was annoying to me. I suppose that she was very comfortable with that expression but it made me feel uncomfortable since she was young enough to be Doug’s girl friend.

She was busy and didn’t spend a lot of time at my table so I didn’t ask her name or if I could take her photo for the blog. I like Whitney and Valerie as servers better.

Service was a slower than on Sunday afternoon but that was fine with me. El Gringo was showing the greatest surfing film of all time, Bruce Brown’s ENDLESS SUMMER, on the big screen television monitors.

That was epic.

Cinema
I was going to go to the cinema this weekend but my plans got changed, largely due to the water heater failure. I went out to Doug’s house on Saturday to borrow two fans so I could air my place out.

He went to see MARIE ANTOINETTE and he didn’t really care all that much for it. He said it was a nice period piece but he faded out at around the one hour or so mark of the film and wanted to head home or go some other place.

Thank you son, you saved Dad USD$8 for a ticket. I had thought about catching THE DEPARTED today but lost interest in getting organized and out of the place early enough to make things worthwhile.

Visitors
We had another good foreign visitor count this past week. We had visitors from Canada [2], Japan [4], Korea [2], France [2], United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia [2], Philippines, Slovenia, Romania, Singapore, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Germany, Taiwan, and Poland

I also had some curious visitors this past week as well. They were all from the United States. One wandered around the blog for 23 minutes and another was here for 12 minutes.

There was a third visitor who visited 11 pages in less than five minutes. I guess that person was looking at the photos.

Woman of the Moment
Since I was on the subject of photos, this would be a good spot to drop in the current Woman of the Moment, Sunisa Kim. Today’s photos came from the Speed Options feature.

Those shoes must be tricky to wear. I mean, Sunisa could fall over and bruise something.

The Original Tommy’s Hamburgers
Doug and I went to the Westminster [California] location of the Original Tommy’s Hamburgers for our lunch on Saturday and, in my case, dinner as part of my trip out behind the Orange Curtain to pick up the fans.

We talked about the election and some of the ballot measures. I don’t think we reached any conclusions.

I will be very glad that the election campaign will be over on Tuesday and I will stop getting recorded phone calls and emails from politicians urging me to vote one or the other on an issue. I have been disappointed by our national government and its ability to do nothing significant. I am more inclined to vote against incumbents since a novice politician can’t be any worse than what we have today.

Career politicians are probably one of the Biblical plagues that missed the ancient Egyptians and landed on us instead.

We also talked about Doug’s paper for one of his classes that he had been having me edit for him. I was having trouble following the paper since it seemed to be two different topics contained in one paper.

Doug solved my confusion by saying the two parts were intentional. First part was about what the individual did that was significant for American television and the second part was how that event has impacted television. Now, the two parts made complete sense to me because they fitted together nicely then.

Clarity and project explanations are not overrated.

Sharon
I had lunch with my friend Sharon on Friday.

She starts her new job on Monday so we were celebrating that after a fashion. Mostly, Sharon wanted some new ideas that she could take to her new job and have them ready to go on the first day. I thought that was fascinating since we had also talked about how some people at her old bank were not volunteering to help her replacement who appears to be unqualified or sharing any ideas with the replacement.

We went to BJ’s Restaurant and Brewery because it is out by her house and we like the food. Eating near her house made sense she wasn’t up too much driving [sore back] and she had a hair appointment in the area after lunch.

I only took a few photos of our dessert.

I had a Cobb salad and that is mostly lettuce with some chopped tomatos, avocados, and, in this case, chicken. Sharon had a sandwich and a baked potato and helped herself to some of my salad.

We shared the dessert. They call it a “pizoukie.” It’s a freshly baked, oversized cookie and topped with three scoops of French vanilla ice cream. Sharon only picked at the dessert so I ended up eating most of it. It was very good and very filling.

I was also not very surprised when my evening blood sugar reading was very elevated. That was to be expected.

Job Searching and Interviewing
I must have done well on my job interview on Thursday.

When I got home from lunch with Sharon, I had a voice message from the human resources person at the company. She wanted me to come in on Tuesday afternoon for another interview. I returned her call and left her message that said I would be back on Tuesday and that I was looking forward to the second interview.

That was a nice way for me to end the week.

El Gringo on Sunday
I went for healthy food again today at El Gringo. I had the Pollo Negro Salad today only this time I forgot to ask them to leave the corn out of the salad. It was not too bad with the scattered corn kernels throughout the salad. It was not my choice.

Whitney the server apologized for the corn after I realized that I had made an error. She offered to have the kitchen make me a new salad without the corn. I said that would be wrong and wasteful since it was my error that caused the trouble.

I was going to ask Whitney if I could take her photo for the blog. Regrettably, Whitney was busy today because the young high school girl who cleans up the tables was not there today. Whitney was doing two jobs today and it was a bit more crowded than it has been in the past on Sunday afternoon.

That gentle readers was my weekend. I hope your weekend was as good as mine.

Be well and stay happy.
