June 6, 2007
June 6, 2007 is the 63rd anniversary of the Allies landing in Normandy in World War II. More Americans died there, on that one day, than have died in Iraq.
Why do I bring this up?
To remind you that freedom is never free and that we should always honor our veterans. Veterans always pay the ultimate price for freedom. Sometimes, it is difficult to be a veteran. I can remember people spitting on me when I came home from serving in our Navy during the Viet Nam War.
War is never a pretty thing and those who have to solve the problems created by the politicians are rarely appreciated. I also have no respect and absolute distaste and hatred for politicians who ran off to college and never served or found cushy spots in the National Guard so they wouldn’t have to serve like the rest of us.
Enough of my use for politicians.
PAPRIKA
I went to see PAPRIKA today.
Actually, I saw it twice. I think you need to see it twice so you don’t miss anything. For the record, I still think I missed something. PAPRIKA is a Japanese anime by Satoshi Kon.
I was going to see WAITRESS as the second film. But, since Doug said WAITRESS looked like the Summer sleeper hit film and would be in theaters for a while, I figured I could catch WAITRESS a little later on this Summer.
Satoshi Kon also directed MILLENNIUM ACTRESS and TOKYO GODFATHERS. They are anime works as well. I think TOKYO GODFATHERS is also one of the better alternative versions of the John Ford – John Wayne classic THE SEARCHERS.
It is very difficult to describe the film beyond saying it is sort of similar to Cronenberg’s EXISTENZ. I think this is how David Lynch might direct an anime film, if he ever had a mind to do that.
PAPRIKA is the name of an avatar in a psychotherapy program where she invades a patient’s dreams in order to help the patient. The device gets stolen or falls into the wrong hands and that is when the trouble begins.
But, you knew that was going to happen.
The animation is top notch and the visuals are stunning. Since they visuals are often of or from dream sequences, there is a surreal nature to them.
I can recommend PAPRIKA very highly.
For the record, I have THE SEARCHERS, EXISTENZ, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, and TOKYO GODFATHERS in my DVD collection. I will add PAPRIKA to the collection as soon as it becomes available here in the States.
Woman of the Moment
Our new Woman of the Moment is Bipasha Basu. She is an Indian actress who was born on May 5, 1979. We almost share the same birthday; isn’t that slick. According to the Internet Movie Database, Bipasha has appeared in 31 films since 2001, including those films is post production.
For the statistically inclined, this is not a good week for you. The only useful statistic that I found was her height. She is 69 inches / 174 centimeters tall. Sometimes, I have a run of bad luck when it comes to finding the statistical information. Maybe if I read Hindi I would have had better luck.
Job Searching and Interviewing
I had a preliminary telephone job interview today for an interesting position that I could have easily managed and succeeded at. The interview lasted on five minutes because there was a money problem. The salary range was low based on my experience.
I told the recruiter that while I found the job interesting and something that I would enjoy, I didn’t think it made any sense since I would only be there until I found a job that paid what I wanted.
The recruiter said that he understood my position. I think he may have wanted me because he said he was going to talk to his bosses about the salary. He said he would call me if they changed their minds and the salary limits.
I will not hold my breath until I hear from him again.
Be well and stay happy and enjoy the new Woman of the Moment.
