Weekend Update - July 1st

Weekend Update
I did some cleaning on Saturday and some more on Sunday. Hardly a great way to spend a wonderful sunny weekend.

I also planned to do some laundry on Sunday morning. I set the clock radio for the usual time of 5:21 AM; one tap of the snooze button and I get up at about 5:30 AM. Well, 5:21 came and went this morning. I decided that I could do the laundry on Wednesday or next weekend and that the extra sleep would be better for me.

The extra sleep was needed. I woke up again at 8:00 AM

On the other hand, I did do some reading in the afternoon on Saturday out on the balcony. I was reading the Chinese classic, Journey to the West. I have not made a great deal of progress since the novel is over 2,100 pages long and in four volumes. I think I will be reading this book at New Year’s Eve.

In Southern California, we measure our rainfall from July 1st to June 30th. It won’t rain tonight so I know how little rain we received this year. We received just over 3.5 inches / 22.5 centimeters. The average rainfall is 15 inches / 39 centimeters.

What does this mean to or for me?

It is highly likely that Southern California will have a very long and very bad late Summer – early Fall fire season.

I did work on some lesson plans for the week’s classes. I only have three lesson plans to prepare since my two Wednesday classes will be cancelled because of the 4th of July. That is nice for me.

Do they have 4th of July in England?

Yes, they just don’t celebrate it the way we do here in America.

I discovered that I missed the Southern California Anime Convention on Sunday. It is being held this weekend in Long Beach this weekend. I could not bring myself to hop in the Prelude and drive to Long Beach today. I had other things, like lesson plans, to complete. I would have attended if I had more notice of the event.

Oh well, there is always next year. I wonder where it will be held; last year was in Anaheim, near Disneyland.

Visitors
This was an off month for blog visitors. I’m not certain why this would concern me. I am not getting paid to write the blog. It does take up my time that I could productively spend on other endeavors like watching the young women at the beach in their bikinis play beach volleyball.

I could sleep in the sun or smoke a cigar on the balcony.

Anyway, I was getting concerned about the fall off in visitors. Then, I realized that I am writing for my own benefit. I should not get concerned. Visitors will come and visitors will leave, regardless of how compelling a writer I am.

Not to worry Charles.

This month was a better showing for visitors than July of last year when we had only 265 visitors. But, then, it should have a better showing than last year. We had 356 visitors to the blog in June. This is down a lot from may when we had 576 visitors. They came from the United States, of course, and from Korea, India [2], Germany [2], China [2], Ireland, Australia [2], Canada [2], Hungary, Portugal, and Japan.

Doug and the iPhone and Movie Posters
Doug received an iPhone from his mother as a graduation from the university gift. Actually, he was the one who stood in line to get the phone. Unfortunately for him, the AT&T store that he went to did not have any phones; the shipment had been delayed. He was able to get a priority order placement with overnight shipping. He may get the new phone next week sometime.

I was not in any line for an iPhone yesterday.

I just use a cellular phone to make calls mostly. I think I have sent maybe a dozen text messages so far this year and maybe 15 text messages since I got my first cellular phone in 1989.

For the record, I ordered Doug some old movie posters as my graduation gift. I will get them framed after they arrive sometime next week.

I’m not sure where Doug will hang the posters at his mother’s house. The plan is for the posters to decorate his apartment that he will get when he lands a good paying job. First, he needs to land a job.

Teaching
Friday was payday at school. That was nice to see the paycheck. In addition to my regular check, I received a bonus check for being a good teacher. The bonus was based on student evaluations of my teaching style and ability. It was not a very big bonus, about USD$400. It was still a very nice bonus for me. I spent part of the bonus on some new DVDs. I think I will buy some more DVDs in a while when more of the DVDs that I want are available.

Friday morning was also my quarterly faculty evaluation session. I get evaluated every quarter, as a teacher, by one of the department chairs. I had a very good evaluation. The scoring system ranges from 1.0 [the best] to 5.0 [the worst]. My rating was 1.41, a very high mark. I would have received a higher mark if more of my students had been in class instead of job interviewing and sleeping late.

Life happens.

It was very nice to have two separate evaluations that said I was a very good teacher.

Woman of the Moment
The new Woman of the Moment is a model from Speed Options magazine. Her name is Jessica Vincent and she is from Connecticut [one of our states] and went to the University of Connecticut. Speed Options did not say what her area of study was.

For the statistically inclined ones out there, Jessica is 67 inches / 170 centimeters tall. She measures 35 – 24 – 35 inches / 89 – 61 – 89 centimeters.

Based on a limited Google search, it appears that Jessica is either 20 or 21 years old. That would put her birthday in 1986 or 1987.

Sooner or later, you will notice that there is a change in Jessica’s hair. I believe those photos were taken in 2007 but I could be wrong. The photos came from the Speed Options web site.

Jess the Server and El Gringo
I went to El Gringo today for an early dinner after a large breakfast of eggs and hash brown potatos and a small steak. I don’t normally have a breakfast like this all of the time; this was a once or twice a year breakfast for me.

Jess the Server was back on the job. Naturally, she was busy so we did not speak very much. Jess had spent most of the day so she was a little tired and sun burnt.

Life was good in Southern California today.

That was my weekend; I hope you had a great weekend.

Be well and stay happy.
