Weekend Update - June 10th

Weekend Update
It was a great weekend for me.

Doug stopped by on Friday afternoon to change his clothes before he went out with his friends. We grabbed lunch at Giuliano’s since I usually have a sandwich from there for my Friday dinner. Doug was just hungry.

Understandable.

I don’t have a lot to say this weekend because writing lesson plans takes times and is not very exciting.

I know I forgot to post the Weekend Bonus Feature on Friday like I usually do. I got distracted with some lesson plans and then Doug stopped by in the middle of the day. I was also reading a Star Wars book that I had ordered. I had a difficult time on Thursday getting Blogger.com to accept the Woman of the Moment photos.

I’ll include the Hankook Tire Girls here.

I did order the DANGER AFTER DARK DVD collection on Friday. That was something useful for me. It features a film that stars Eiko Koike. That was a good enough reason for me to buy the set and the pricing was reasonable. Now, I can take this set off of my list of DVDs to purchase.

I will be heading to DVD Planet on Friday I think to spend a rebate from Cingular. I have a couple of pre-loaded VISA Debit Cards. I think I can pick up a couple more films from my list.

I went to El Gringo on Sunday for a late lunch or early dinner. I will write about the meal tomorrow so I have something to say.

Visitors
It was a slightly off week for visitors to the blog. I think my writing was off for the last two weeks because of the break from school and classes.

We had visitors from France [4], Japan [3], Netherlands, Korea [2], Canada [3], Benin, Philippines [2], Thailand, Belgium, Poland, India, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, United Kingdom, Singapore, Germany, and Texas [2].

This was the first time that I can recall that the blog had a visitor from Benin.

We also had visitors who found things to read. These three visitors stayed around for twenty seven minutes, twenty one minutes, and eleven minutes.

I wonder what photos they were interested in or maybe I wrote something worthwhile for a change.

Anyway.

I do appreciate all of you who take time to visit the blog. Your continued support encourages me to write more stuff and post more photos.

USS Frank E Evans (DD 754)
The part of the USS Frank E Evans was lost at sea following a collision with HMAS Melbourne, an aircraft carrier on June 3, 1969. The collision happened around 2:30 AM during flight operations. 74 sailors lost their lives from a crew of 272.

I make a serious effort to remember the Evans and her crew. Five of the sailors who died had been in my division when I served on board the USS Leonard F Mason. The sailors, for the most, who transferred from my ship, were young and married. Navy Regulations would not allow them to bring their families to Japans when the Mason shifted its home port from Long Beach, California to Yokosuka, Japan for a two year deployment. The men transferred to the Evans so they could be home.

I saw the stern half of the Evans when my ship was in Subic Bay in Philippines just after the collision.

It was a very sobering sight for me and words will never be able to express or convey my sense of loss when I saw the ship.

The sea is a cruel mistress and she exacts a harsh toll on those who sail upon her.

Programming Note
Starting tomorrow, Monday the 11th, I go back to teaching. I have three night classes, Monday through Wednesday. No class gets out before 9:30PM. That means I will not be writing my blog in the evening as I usually do. I will try to toss a posting up in the morning.

I may take some time getting adjusted to the new schedule so do not expect to see the great American novel up here on Monday.

Teaching
Doing lesson plans is no fun at all.

I struggled with my lesson plans this weekend. This is something I will be doing for the next ten weekends I guess.

I have to teach from a pre-written syllabus. That, in and of itself, is not necessarily bad. What bothers me is the tendency in one of my classes to jump all over the place instead of following the textbook. It is much easier for the students to progress in a linear manner than to follow someone else’s version of how the subject matter should be presented. After all, the text author is a widely respected professor at a major American university and probably knows more about the course.

Oh well, it is not for me to worry about niceties like this.

Justice
It was very nice to see Paris Hilton get sent back to the Los Angeles County Jail ward on Friday to sere out the rest of her sentence.

For me, it was not a question about whether the punishment was appropriate or not. It was all about equal treatment under the law. Our legal system is built on the idea of men and women being equal under the law. If we do not support this concept, then our nation loses as a society.

Besides, Hilton could have avoided all of her troubles by not drinking and driving. Yes, she could have had a designated driver who was sober and avoided the trouble. Rich as she is reported to be, she could have hired a driver so she wouldn’t have to worry about these problems.

Oh my, those are very clever concepts there Charles to avoid legal trouble.

Woman of the Moment
And now, to a lighter moment, it is time for the Woman of the Moment feature with Bipasha Basu. This is a good way to close out the posting.

Be well and stay happy and I hope you had a great weekend.
