Weekend Update - February 4th

Weekend Update
Wow.

It’s February already. What happened to January and December for that matter? Time certainly is moving by at a faster rate or so it seems to me.

Visitors
We had more foreign visitors this past week than we usually have. We had visitors from Singapore, Texas [2], Myanmar, Taiwan, Japan, India [2], Spain, Italy [2], Mali, Malaysia, South Africa, Uganda, Canada [2], France [2], United Kingdom, Serbia & Montenegro, Switzerland, China [3], Mexico, Sweden, Australia, and Spain.

I think this was the first week for visitors from Mali, Uganda, and Myanmar to the blog.

We had two curious visitors who spent twenty two minutes and eleven minutes reading the blog.

Then, we had one visitor who spent an incredible fifty two minutes reading the blog. I think fifty two minutes is close to the record if not the actual record for a one time visit.

I do appreciate all of you who visit the blog. During the last two months, we had 500 visitors to the blog. I am hopeful that this is a sign that the viewer traffic is on the increase.

Spring is Near!
I saw one of the first signs of Spring yesterday when I was out buzzing around with some errands. I saw a young woman walking on the sidewalk in a bikini. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me and even if I did it would have been hard to take her photo since I was driving.

This has to be one of the earliest bikini sightings that I can recall.

I have been in Honolulu in January, when I was in the United States Navy, and I did see young women in bikinis. But, young women tend to wear bikinis the year round in Honolulu.

Woman of the Moment
We are back to Michelle Yeoh for today’s Woman of the Moment.

Hollywood in the Hood
I was talking with Doug yesterday and we got around to the production shooting that was across the street from my building. I thought it was a motion picture production’s second unit doing some filming.

Doug said he thought it was from BOSTON LEGAL. He had seen some production company directional signs at the bottom of the hill that read “B Legal.” That makes more sense than my conclusion.

Dutch tulip bulbs, Southern California real estate, and other bubbles
I got a postcard from a realtor who is trying to sell a unit–flat in my building. I was amazed at what they wanted for the unit–flat.

The unit–flat has three bedrooms and, it says, three and a half baths in about 2,000 square feet or 185 square meters. It is described as a penthouse unit–flat with excellent views of the city and a peak of the ocean from the top floor. The asking price is USD$850,000.

That struck me as being a bit overblown and over priced. Maybe it was priced high so there would be a lot of wiggle room to negotiate the final selling price.

The unit–flat is back on the market after being sold late last year or the prior sale was a bust. Prices are moderating and declining in some areas. There are eleven other units–flats on the top floor so I guess they are all penthouse units–flats as well. Part of the views comes at the expense of facing a busy street that all of the emergency vehicles, with their sirens on, use.

This is a forty year old building that will probably need substantial repairs in the coming years. We just put a new roof on last year for about USD$125,000 for example. The roof will last for maybe another twenty years. The company that made the building elevator has gone out of business so repairs will only be more expensive as parts are no longer available.

On the plus side, if the unit–flat sells for close to its asking price, it will raise the value of my humble home with its limited view of the park and no city lights or ocean views. That would be very sweet for me and for the Princess and Doug as part of their inheritance.

El Gringo
I had an El Diablo Burrito tonight for dinner. An El Diablo Burrito is made with spicy carne asada along with some onions, rice, cilantro, and beans and is served with some sour cream and some guacamole. It lived up to its reputation as being very spicy. I needed two large glasses of drink to keep my mouth from bursting into flames.

Jess was the server tonight and she was bouncy and bubbly as ever. Jess was even nicer when she came over to my table and greeted me by my name. I ought to take a photo of Jess one of these days so you can see her.

Shoe Shopping
Shoe shopping was a real chore for me this afternoon. All I wanted to buy was some business dress shoes. I wanted to buy another pair of dark brown, wing tip shoes.

Simple, traditional business shoes.

What could be harder to find?

Simple, traditional business shoes were very difficult to find. I ended up going to five stores before I found something that was really close to what I wanted. I was in a mood for a compromise by now.

Once I found the shoes I wanted, I had to endure the salesman’s efforts to get me to buy more stuff. It was all that I could do to stay in the store and complete the transaction and not walk out in frustration.

I was in a very crummy mood until I reached El Gringo and Jess’s big smile and warm greeting. That made me feel much better.

That was my weekend gentle readers.

Be well and stay happy.
