Weekend Preview - May 10th
Weekend Preview
I got home from class after a quick stop at the market for a box of crackers. I was greeted by the buzzing sound of the wood chippers, hard at work at the park today. I wonder when the tree trimmers will finish their work. Maybe they have a large tree trimming project in the park next door and come to work on it when they have a slow period with their other jobs.
On the subject of public works, it looks like the street repaving project as reached a project milestone. I think the workers have finished paving the section next to the curb.
Next, they will do the larger portion in the center of the roadway. The workers will remark the roadway and replace the traffic cones and flashing markers. This will, no doubt, add to the traffic confusion. It will also upset Doug’s overnight parking arrangements until the project is finally finished.
Yesterday, I must have sat in a chair wrong because I had one of the worst shooting pains in my lower back that I have had in several years. It was very difficult to move and getting up or sitting down was a real exercise in pain endurance. I took my daily shot of single malt Scot’s whisky later than usual. I had it just before I went to bed with the expectation and hope mostly that it would help me fall asleep.
I did fall asleep quickly last night and I slept very soundly. Judging from how messed my hair was, I would say that I barely moved last night. My back felt much better this morning and I could move around with minimal discomfort. I was able to stand and talk in class for relatively long periods this morning without too much pain.
Teaching
I had a full classroom today. This was probably because the term is about to end and the students are nervous about whether or not they will pass the course. Some of them should be nervous. I have three students who are failing the course right now. They can turn their grades around by completing the homework and group work assignments. If they do not do the assignments, then I may see them again of I teach the course in a coming term.
Next weekend will be spent in grading homework assignments from all three of my classes. That is not how I planned to spend the time.
When I went to school on Tuesday, I had an email from the administration that said one of the department chairs had undergone a very successful heart valve replacement surgery on Monday morning. He was resting comfortably at the hospital and was expected to go home soon.
That made me feel very good. The chair had helped me in so many ways when I first started out teaching at the school. I would have been lost without his guidance. He showed me how to handle a situation when 80% of my students in my Microeconomics course failed the mid-term examination.
This morning there was another email from the administration in my in-box. It said the chair had died on Tuesday evening of complications from the surgery. This was a real blow to me and to most of the school. He was well liked and had been at school for a number of years.
Life sometimes does not deal fair hands to all of the players.
Woman of the Moment
I was talking to Doug about the fact that Carmen Electra had been on one of the afternoon television talk shows yesterday. He said she had been in Westwood, a section of Los Angeles, earlier in the week with a book promotion event. I almost wished that I had known about it earlier. I could have gone to the promotion and maybe Doug could have snapped a photo of me getting a book signed by Carmen.
I hope you have a great weekend.
Be well and stay happy
