Today's Wednesday Make Up Feature is Yukie Nakama, a Japanese actress that I found while channel surfing one Saturday night. She was playing the female lead in a Japanese samurai historical drama. Then, I saw her in a Japanese limited series comedy.

I slept extremely well last night; better than I have slept in a couple of days. That was very nice for a change for me. My head hit the pillow around 11:00 PM and I did not move, literally, until the clock radio went off at 5:21 AM.

Naturally, I hit the snooze button more than once this morning.

When I did finally drag myself out of my bed, my back was stiff from having been in the same position for so long. It was somewhat painful to walk and bend.

This morning would have been a perfect opportunity for my girl friend, if I had one, to leap to rescue and provide me with a stimulating massage, if she lived with me.

And, what is the moral of this story?

No good deed or event goes unpunished obviously.

I think I took a longer than usual shower this morning as I let the hot water hit my stiff back. That felt much better for me.

The Wedding
I phoned the Princess yesterday to see what type of tuxedos the bridal party was wearing. The Princess wasn’t sure what the men were wearing but said she would add me to the list at Men’s Warehouse. All I have to do now is go to my local store, tell them the group number and wedding name and they will fit me with what I need to take to Atlanta.

That was simple and easy.

I think I will order the tuxedo around Labor Day. I don’t want to wait until the last minute and run into troubles and delays. This is one time when being early makes a lot of sense.

Teaching
Class last night was a challenge for me. Only one of my three students showed up and he was an hour late.

Missing class last night was unfortunate since I covered the chapter that represents about 10% of the course grade. They have a complex problem to complete and then present in class on the last day. I will not be able to go back and cover the chapter for a second time since I have other topics to cover in the remaining weeks of the term.

These students, all three of them, are likely to do poorly in the class and it is not a difficult class to pass. Accounting is a paperwork intensive course. You have to complete a lot of homework and individual and group projects. There are no examinations.

Unfortunately for the students, they have put off doing the homework and projects until the very end. Either they are lazy or they lack the proper motivation to study for school.

I find it depressing to have prepared for class over several hours of my time only to discover that none of the students have even bothered to read the week’s chapter or chapters. They come to class ill prepared and unready to learn.

Tonight’s class should be interesting since most of the students are working diligently towards completing all of their course work. I still have about half of the class that has not done anything. They will do poorly in the course; one or two may even fail because they did not complete the coursework assignments and course project.

I do my best and encourage the students to get the work turned in on time.

Woman of the Moment
Xu Junglei will only be here for a few days. I was only able to find a limited number of photos of her. She does not have an English language official web site that I could find. I am almost certain that she has a Chinese web site. Not reading Chinese was a major handicap in finding it for me. Still I am pleased with the images that I found.





I wish my back was as flexible as her back is in the sidebar image.

Looking for More Women of the Moment

Looking for More Women of the Moment
I had some spare time yesterday and went looking for some more Women of the Moment. I ended up finding a couple more Korean actresses and an actress from Singapore. I know Speed Options will have a new model to consider on Wednesday.

The Korean actresses are Kang Jung Hwa, 26, and Yoon Hae Young, 34, from a weekday serial, High as the Sky, Wide as the Earth that I have been watching since Pure in Heart ended earlier this year. The Singaporean actress is Fann Wong. I happened to stumble across her in my Google Images search. I need to do more research about where or not to include her as a potential Woman of the Moment.

Odds and Ends
I was watching my Korean historical epic drama last night. It is one of the ways that I use to end the weekend. The drama is slowly moving towards its conclusion; it is around Episode 60 or so and that means it will end sometime around the end of the year or early January.

This is all beside the point actually.

An American company ran an advertisement for a tax preparation service. That struck me as being rather odd. Most people do not think about having their taxes prepared in July so why advertise now? The viewers will likely forget by next year anyway.

The other thing that was odd about the advertisement was that it was in English with no Korean subtitles. It seemed like it was missing its target market by a wide margin.

In the next commercial break, the show had a local advertisement for a performance by a Korean opera singer. The ad carried her voice and music in the background, nice work. But, the voice and music carried over into the other commercials that were shown during the same break. It was difficult to hear the voice-overs from the other advertisements.

I wonder who will pay for that error.

Doug called me this morning. He just received his Bluetooth ear piece to go with the new iPhone. He needed to check it out.

I said he sounded fine.

Doug said that was because he was using an Apple device.

Doug also said that he was going to crash at my flat on Wednesday because he was going to see a special David Lynch screening at UCLA. He said he was on some guest list and thought he wouldn’t be at my place until the time I get home from school on Wednesday night.

My Friend Amy
My friend Amy called this morning.

Getting a call from Amy always makes my day so much better. We haven’t talked since Doug and I went to dinner at Fleming’s in Newport Beach when she was our server. Amy wanted to know how I was and what I was doing.

Well and working mostly.

Unfortunately and regrettably, the call ended all too soon for me.

Someone came into her store and she had a potential sale to close. I could talk to Amy at night but that is usually after 9:00 PM when he head off to bed because I get up much earlier than she does in the morning.

El Gringo
I went to El Gringo on Sunday afternoon for my usual late lunch – early dinner. I had expected to see Jess the Server there. Jess was not working; her fill-in from last week was there.

The fill-in must have remembered me. She made an error in the bill; she undercharged me and chose not to change it after I pointed the error out to her. I have been going there long enough to know how much a particular meal will cost.

That was nice of her. The extra money that I didn’t pay for my meal went into her tip.

I wonder if she will be there next Sunday.

Woman of the Moment
I decided to have Xu Jinglei as the Woman of the Moment. Jinglei, 33, is a Chinese actress from Beijing whose blog was the first to reach over 100 million. That is a slick claim to fame. She has also appeared in 15 films and directed three films.

I was only able to find a limited number of images so Jinglei will not be a Woman of the Moment for very long.

Weekend Update - July 29th

Weekend Update – July 29th
One of my students emailed me in a panic about being overwhelmed and in need of tutoring. I offered to help the student and gave him several times when I could be at school to help him.

He wrote back a little later and thanked me for the offer. He went on to say that he felt he was doing fine in my class but was feeling lost in his mathematics class. He said that he should probably talk to his mathematics instructor instead of me.

That made me feel better; much better actually.

I hope he can find the help that he needs.

Adam Carolla was hosting a car wash on Saturday morning. It should have been an interesting one. The car wash was jointly sponsored by a strip bar called Spearmint Rhino. The dancers / strippers were going to wash the cars for free but you were expected to make a contribution to a charity, a generous contribution.

I had thought about going and getting the Prelude washed. It is way past due a car wash. I almost went and then I came to my senses. I would have spent more on that car wash then I would have spent at a professional car wash where I have a degree of confidence that the workers are competent.

I knew the dancers / strippers were highly skilled at moving their bodies to the sound of music while taking their clothes off. I think their ability to wash cars is suspect at best.

In the end, I decided to take the Prelude to the professional car wash during the week and get it cleaned then. I can combine the car wash with the Prelude’s smog control inspection that is due by September.

We almost had a strike by some port workers in the Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. A strike would have closed down the ports and caused significant damage to the United States economy. 40% of the nation’s imports flow through these adjacent ports.

But, being able to find a bright side of almost anything, one good benefit of the strike would have been absence of trucks hauling container boxes on the local freeways. Traffic would have moved faster and more freely. That is an excellent benefit.

There would have been less pollution from the truck’s diesel exhaust. That is an excellent benefit.

I had my six month visit to my dentist on Saturday afternoon. He has a new teeth cleaner that is water based and that does away with a lot of the old scrapping and picking. This is so much better for me. My teeth are all in good shape and so I am good for another six months.

Sweet for me.

I was out television channel surfing on Saturday. I was bored and I did not want to work on lesson plans or write the quiz for my Business Law class. I think I get something like 150 channels of television and I only watch about a dozen or regularly.

One of my mindless channel surfing stops is the car sales infomercials on the Spanish and other foreign language stations. I don’t know that much Spanish or the other languages but I do enjoy watching the young women strut around in short dresses and shout about what a great vehicle the car is.

As I said, it is a mindless diversion for me.

Besides, the advertising programs recycle themselves after 15 minutes so I am not staying there for hours at a time.

As I was wandering between car sales infomercials, I stumbled across an Indian language, Hindi I assume, station that was broadcasting Indian music videos. This sucked me and before I knew it, I had spent close to half an hour watching the Indian music videos.

They are really well made and have some great production values and choreography that reminded me of the American musicals from the 1930s. I suppose my viewing would have been better if I knew who I was watching.

I did see some who could become Women of the Moment. I need to study the music videos more; maybe next weekend I can work on that.

I seem to be developing an acquired like or desire for Indian women. Maybe desire is too strong a term. The Indian women were not like some anorexic Western actresses, models, and singers. I think it is nice to see a healthy woman.

I don’t think I could have a long term relationship with an Indian woman since most of them do not eat beef. You all know how much Doug and I love a really well cooked steak from Morton’s or now from Flemings but only if Amy the Server is working there.

Visitors
We managed to exceed the July 2006 total visitor count this month with a count of 313 as of Sunday afternoon. Last year, we had a total of 265 visitors in July.

We had visitors from Canada [3], Australia [3], United Kingdom [2], Japan, Gibraltar, Spain [2], Korea, Ireland, Indonesia, Netherlands, Chile, Poland, and Texas.

This was the first visit from Gibraltar to the blog.
We had one visitor who stuck around for 20.25 minutes.

I do appreciate all of you who took time to stop by and see what the blog had to offer.

Woman of the Moment
This is the last of Faline Song as a regular Woman of the Moment. I am reasonably certain she will be back as a make up edition or a best of feature. Weekend Preview - July 26th

Weekend Preview – July 26th
The weekend is here again and I am looking forward to catching up on my sleep. The Wednesday classes are a real sleep killer for me. I got home from school on Tuesday around a little after 10:00PM and it was closer to 11:00 before I can get to sleep.

I was up at 5:30AM on Wednesday so I can be to school in time for my 8:00AM. I stay at school until the night class because of the time, a couple of hours, involved with going home and then coming back for the night class and cost of the gasoline to power the Prelude. I left school a little after 10:00PM and it was close to midnight before I crawled into my bed.

That made for a long day for me. I will be going to bed early tonight and getting some of my lost hours of sleep back.

I did notice that mid-grade gasoline, 89 octane, was selling for $2.995 a gallon or $0.80 a liter on my way home from class last night. Maybe I will be driving more in the coming weeks.

Comic-Con, the big comic books and film convention in San Diego, is being held this weekend. Doug and I have been going to Comic-Con off and on for maybe ten or fifteen years. Since Doug had no compelling interest in going this year, I will be staying home and resting.

I will also be writing a test for one of my classes, grading papers and assignments, and creating lesson plans for next week’s classes.

I haven’t made up my mind if I am going to go to the cinema this weekend or not. I do have a lot of things to get done and catching a film will suck up three to four hours of my time.

Teaching
We had our monthly faculty meeting on Wednesday.

The monthly faculty meetings are required by the administration and the accreditation agency. I don’t know why we have them since almost nothing gets done except that the meeting produces some nice minutes and I guess everyone feels good.

One of the faculty members at the meeting was complaining about students who are parking in the faculty and staff spots in the parking lot. I thought this was a very small tempest in a tea pot. The other instructor should have been more upset about the faculty and staff members who take up two parking spots with their sloppy parking.

The school is starting its regular faculty and course evaluation program tomorrow. This means I will have to nag my students and probably drag or shame some of them into completing the evaluations.

Evaluations are more important than teaching the students, it seems.

I find that to be a strange outcome.

On Monday, I ran into one of my Tuesday students before the Monday class. I asked the student if I count on seeing him in class tomorrow night and I also asked about the missing assignments the student had to turn in. The student said that he would be in class with the homework.

The student did not show up for class and obviously did not turn in the assignments.

I am not sure what troubles me more; the lack of student ethics or the willingness to lie to your instructor. I know I would never lie to any of my professors at any level of college or university.

It will not surprise any of you, gentle readers, when I say this student will probably fail the course. And, it is not a difficult course to pass, so long as you complete all of the assignments.

My Neighbors
As many of you know, I live in a building. It is an old building and parts of it are wearing out now. Plumbers had to replace part of a drain pipe in the building on Monday. The drain pipe had become corroded over the years.

The walls lack the degree of sound insulation that you would find in a modern building.

I got home from class on Tuesday and found my new neighbor had left the bathroom fan on and left the flat. I know because I knocked on their door to complain about the noise. The fan motor is beginning to fail and the bearings are wearing out, making a loud noise.

I had trouble sleeping on Tuesday and the fan was still on when I woke up on Wednesday morning. Thankfully, it was off when I returned home on Wednesday.

I can not, for the life of me, understand how or why my neighbors could have left their noisy fan on and then left. If I could hear it loud and clear in my flat, then, they must have been able to hear in their flat.

They could not even apologize to their neighbors for their thoughtless and inconsiderate action.

I just hope I remember to turn my alarm clock off when I go to Atlanta in a couple of months for the Princess’ wedding. If I forget, the alarm will go off for three days and play rock and roll music for an hour each morning until I return home.

Summer Rain

Summer Rain
One of the after features of Summer rain in Southern California is an unnecessary degree of humidity in the air, even at the beach. It was humid at the beach all day yesterday. It was still humid and muggy when I stepped out of the air conditioned, classroom building at 10:00 PM last night.

Fortunately, the humidity seemed to go away as I drove towards the beach. By the time I reached the flat, the humidity seemed to have dissipated.

I had a solid but short night’s sleep last night.

I woke up too early. I have another evening class tonight and I have a morning class on Wednesday.

Thursdays are very popular with me as I catch up on my missing sleep time.

Today is another one of those days when I didn’t have much to say in the blog.

Teaching
The term is more than half over now. I am looking forward to its conclusion.

I am making plans for how I will change my approaches to teaching in the next term. I think I want to become sterner on homework submission. I do not want to wait until the last day of class for the students to turn their assignments for the term. Waiting to turn in homework is a sign of lack of preparation and work ethic by the students.

I went to law school at night and held a full time job and started a family. I know what studying is and how to arrange a schedule to accomplish the studying requirements. I think the students are lazy.

Woman of the Moment
I have run out of really well thought out themed image set for Faline Song. I am now going with images that sort of look related in some form.





We will have a new Woman of the Moment on Monday. That will be something to look forward to I suppose.

You know it is a thin blog day when I start with the Woman of the Moment. I think I still have some more themed image sets of Faline Song. I hoped you liked yesterday’s theme of lingerie.

Here It Is Monday, Again
And I am running low on things to say or write about today. Actually, I do have a few things to say and observations to make.

We had some that we call rain this morning. You would probably say it wasn’t rain at all. The ground just got dampened and that was about it.

No thunder and lightening or anything storm like.

You see, when you live on the edge of a desert and last year’s rainfall amounted to less than four inches or ten centimeters, any rainfall is a big event.

I went to El Gringo for my usual Sunday afternoon meal. Jess the Server was not working yesterday so I just ordered a chicken burrito and an iced tea. I did not recognize the replacement server so I had very little motivation to strike up a conversation. If she is there next week, then I will strike up a conversation with her. Striking up a conversation should be easy since I am usually the only customer in the place at the time.

I like to avoid crowds when I can.

The Pathfinder hit 73,000 miles or 117,500 kilometers when I drove out to Doug’s on Saturday to drop off the framed posters. I needed to take the Pathfinder because it had the room for the full size, framed posters.

I was out driving on Sunday as I am sometimes prone to do. That was when I saw a crime against automobile lovers the world over.

I drove by a recent model Mercedes-Benz. It was one of those square, boxy SUVs that were popular some time back. I was shocked to see it painted a very light pink and it appeared to have a darker pink or maybe purple or burgundy pin striping on the sides.

This was so wrong in so many ways. SUVs are truck like vehicles; trucks are not painted a light pink. Mercedes-Benzes are painted black or dark blue and never light pink.

It looked ghastly to me. I would not be caught in that vehicle unless a lot of money changed into m hands first.

On the plus side, it certainly would be easy to find the vehicle in a crowded parking lot at the end of the day or event.

Weekend Update - July 22

Weekend Update – July 22nd
I did some cleaning and laundry on Saturday. I didn’t get all that I planned to do completed but I did make a good start towards cleaning the place up a bit. I will work on the cleaning during the week so that I will be caught up by the end of the week.

My movie trip ended up with me taking a walk along the beach instead today. It was warm and sunny and one of those really nice Southern California days that cried out to be spent outside. Regrettably, I left my camera home and passed up the chance to create my own local Woman of the Moment on the Beach feature.

Maybe next week.

I was reading one of my news feeds over the weekend. It carried a report from Technorati that said a Chinese woman was the first to achieve over 100 million hits to her blog. Given that I have only achieved a little over 6,000 visitors, I was impressed the success of Xu Jinglei. Her blog is only about her personal life and I guess that makes it all the more impressive.

Since she is an actress and film director, I was able to download a few images of her. Unlike her Japanese and Korean counterparts, she does not have a web site or a collection of bikini photos. I did find enough to have a small Woman of the Moment segment in the near future.



One of the few features of the Microsoft Office 2007 Upgrade that I like is the frequency that it sends me update files. I seem to be getting an update email notice each week with ten or more updates to load.

This leads me to conclude one of two possibilities exist. One, Microsoft is getting along better with my Firefox web browser. Two, Microsoft is still producing error prone products with gaping security holes.

I’m hoping it is because Microsoft will tolerate working with Firefox.

Visitors
The visitor traffic picked up this week and that was nice to see. The foreign visitor count is off from before the start of the Summer. We had visitors from Canada [5], Texas, United Kingdom [2], Brazil, Chile, Japan, Italy [2], Ireland, Pakistan, Australia [2], France, Spain, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore [2].

We also had some visitors who stayed with the blog for an extended period of time. We had visitors stay for 22.5, 21.5, 20.5, and 19.5 minutes.

I do appreciate all of you who stopped by to visit the blog.

Woman of the Moment
I decided to move the Woman of the Moment up from the end of the blog for a change. I don’t know if this is a permanent change or not. I think I am about to run out of Faline Song photo themes in the next day or so.






Doug's Posters
I picked up the posters from the framer, Bay Cities Frames, yesterday and took them out to his mother’s house. The framer did a great job on the poster; both Doug and I were very pleased with the workmanship.


After we unloaded the Pathfinder, Doug and I went to lunch at Fatburger in Mission Viejo. It had been a while since we ate at Fatburger. I had a Kingburger Big Deal which is a half pound / quarter kilogram beef patty with cheese, tomato, onion, and lettuce. Doug had the same meal. With the Big Deal meal, you also get a choice of skinny fries or fat fries and a medium drink. I had skinny fries and he had fat fries.


It was a tasty meal.

The Princess
The Princess called me on Friday morning just before my morning class ended. I took the call because it was unusual for her to call then. My class was not concerned; they started to pack up their books in anticipation of class ending soon.

There was no emergency. That was nice.

The Princess called to tell me her fiancé was wearing a kilt to the wedding. This was more than a surprise for me. About all I could say was that I didn’t think I would be wearing a kilt to the wedding.

I am sure there is a perfectly good reason for the kilt out there somewhere.

If nothing else, the wedding photos will be colorful.

The Princess also managed to resolve the names on the invitation decision this week. I guess she ran into a time line constraint and had to make a decision or else the invitation would not be finished in time for a proper mailing.

Weekend Preview - July 19th

Weekend Preview
Ah yes, another wonderful weekend in here and I am ready to enjoy it.

I had planned to spend part of Saturday and Sunday in my local cinema multi-plex, catching on this Summer’s films. It now looks like Sunday is going to be my day for the cinema. That is fine with me.

One of the things that I will not be doing is going to the Southern California Tattoo Expo that will be held this weekend. I am just not all that interested in seeing peoples’ tattooed bodies. I don’t want to meet this person for example.


On the big plus side, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed barely above the 14,000 mark today. This is a milestone or kilometer marker for the American economy. Since some of my retirement money is invested in the stock market, I feel a little wealthier today. Maybe I will be able to afford going Burger King for a Whopper with Cheese when I stop working.

This being a weekend, I naturally have stuff to do around the flat; cleaning and laundry of course. I also have to take the Prelude in for smog control device check some time soon so I can renew the car’s registration for another year. Come September, the Prelude will be nineteen years old.


I never ever thought I would own one car for so long.

When I was driving home from school last night, I managed to accidentally hit and kill a feral cat. I had just come off of the freeway and I was slowing down to make a turn on the exit road. I saw the cat dart in front of the Pathfinder and knew that it would clear the truck.

For some unknown reason, the cat reached the side of the exit road safely only to turn around and try to re-cross the exit road. I was unable to stop because there were cars behind me and I could not swerve because there was an oil tank truck next to me.

I hit the cat and, if I did not kill, the car behind me surely did because it followed my path completely.

I did not intend to hit the cat; it just ran in front of the Pathfinder and I had no options that would not result in harm to other humans including myself.

When I got home, I thought about the cat. I wondered what would have happened if I had not stayed later at school to talk to my students about a group project they are working. I wondered what would have happened if I had been driving a bit slower and closer to the speed limit. I wondered what would have happened if I had taken a different exit from the freeway.

In the end, I decided that there was nothing that I could have done and then I went to bed, around midnight.

Doug’s Posters
I was out running some errands today. I stopped by the framing company to see how Doug’s posters were coming along. They will be done by early Saturday morning. I will pick them up around Noon and then drop them off with Doug.

This will make Doug very happy and will present a minor challenge over where he will put them in his Mother’s house.

That is not my problem.

Vivian’s Man of the Moment
There will be no Vivian’s Man of the Moment this week. Her favorite feature will reappear next week with an attractive young actor.

Teaching
On Wednesday, the school had a career or job fair. It could have been better if the students had more notice of the event. I never received a formal email notice; I only saw a flyer in the hall. Better notice could have produced better results.

Also, the school had free bar-be-cued hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks for lunch and for dinner. That was a nice benefit for me since I was at school from 7:20 AM until 10:30PM, a very long day.

I had a very good class on Wednesday. I did lose four students. They were dropped for nonattendance. They missed three classes in a row. I know one student was trying to withdraw. I started with a roster of 31 students and now it will be 16; I never saw some of the students, some appeared on my roster on Monday and were gone by class on Wednesday.

The smaller class will be more fun for students and for me. I can give the students more individualized attention and assistance. Some of them need academic and emotional encouragement from time to time.

I also learned that two staff members suffered serious medical events at school recently, within the last week. One of the math instructors may have experienced a mild heart attack; he is out for the rest of the term. The other staff member may have suffered a mild stroke.

I never thought of teaching as being a high risk profession, aside from paper cuts and white board marker dust on your hands.

Woman of the Moment
I seem to have developed a pattern of having the Woman of the Moment at the end of the blog posting. I think this is because I got used to reading Star and Stripes when I was in the United States Navy.
